Creativity Check-In: Celebrating YOUR Creative Gifts

Creative gifts

Hey there, Creatives!

Remember that post a few weeks ago when we talked about re-defining our creative joy?

I think we can take that a step deeper. Re-defining creative joy is about taking our creative gifts, and pushing them past our personal comfort zones, right? Reminding ourselves about why we love our creativity, and even how we embrace our gifts.

But let’s call a time out for just a minute, because I want to ask you an important question.

What are your creative gifts? How can we re-define (and re-discover) our creative joy if we don’t first identify the ways in which we are creatively gifted.

I have had the privilege of speaking to so. many. music therapists, and hearing the stories of my colleagues is incredibly inspiring! During so many conversations, one of the most common things I have heard and continue to hear is that a) we aspire to be creative like “so-and-so”, and b) we feel that we can’t achieve that. But here’s the truth – you CAN achieve a new and different creative experience, but it will be, look, sound, and feel completely different because each of us is creatively gifted in different, beautiful ways. Imagine how incredibly vibrant our community will be when we identify our creative gifts, and the ways in which our ownership of them makes them incredibly special.

This reminds me of words spoken by Mr. Einstein: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” So, let’s apply that to us! Every music therapist is (incredibly) creative. But if you judge a music therapist by his/her ability to _____________, s/he will spend their whole career thinking they are not gifted.  In that blank, I invite you to insert your personal creative challenge. Is it song writing? Intervention development? Creative self care? Piano skills? Guitar skills? Comfort navigating technology? Whatever it is, put it there. If you spend any part of your day thinking about how you wish you could _________, you will continually miss out on maximizing your creative energy in ways that help you be a rock star MT!

So how do you recognize your creative gifts? We’ve talked about writing them down or making a list, trying new things, and even making a list of the ways in which you wish you were more creative. The best, most rewarding way to celebrate your personal brand of creative genius is to start with what you know, and then push outwards. You know – re-define your creative joy! Stretch those creative muscles, and break down that creative glass ceiling. Maybe you’ll start with songwriting, journaling, intervention design, objective goal writing, recording your big ideas…and then ask yourself, what is my better, more creative way?

I bet that you’ll find your special creative spirit, and you know what – I can’t wait to hear how you’re celebrating your unique, very special creative gifts. I so hope you’ll let me know what you discover in the comments below! 🙂

Yours in creativity,

Steward, The Music Therapy Marketplace
